Maintenance beginning on Lyonia Preserve

Volusia County began a two-week boundary line maintenance project in Lyonia Preserve in Deltona Monday, July 18.

Land management staff will use a tracked vehicle with a mulching head to grind down smaller trees and vegetation without causing ground disturbance. This work will take place mainly along the perimeter fence line encompassing the preserve.

Lowering the encroaching vegetation is a routine management practice, reducing the risk of fire spread in the case of a wildfire while also allowing protection to adjacent properties during the application of prescribed fire. Another benefit of this mulching project will be to decrease the mid-story vegetation buildup immediately behind the Deltona Regional Library and amphitheater, improving visitor security.

Staff will mark gopher tortoise burrows and bypass less dense areas of vegetation.

Temporary hiking trail restrictions and closures will be minimal. Signage will be placed.

For more information, call Volusia County’s Resource Stewardship Division at (386) 943-7081.
